“You’re a vile one, Mr. Grinch!
You have termites in your smile.
You have all the tender sweetness
Of a seasick crocodile,
Given the choice between the two of you,
I’d take the seasick crocodile!”
The Grinch. Even his name sounds unpleasant. A creature who doesn’t like a season of joy, giving, play, and love? How on earth could that be?
(Well it didn’t happen on earth, did it? It happened in Whoville, just over Mount Crumpit!)
It is rumored that the Grinch didn’t have a lot of friends growing up. He was teased for the color of his skin and the furriness of his face. He was a loner. His teachers didn’t know how to get him involved in the classroom, and his parents didn’t seem to notice the jokes and stares.
Because of that, he grew up to hate Christmas. The Grinch even tried to steal Christmas. He took away everything he thought brought delight to the inhabitants of Whoville.
He learned, in the end, that Christmas is about more than gifts and decorations. But imagine all the Christmas celebrations he missed out on…
If the Grinch had had a Court Appointed Special Advocate, maybe he would have been able to be placed in a home with parents who were more like him. Maybe he could have had someone to talk to about the teasing he faced in school. Maybe he would not have felt so alone and angry. The Grinch wouldn’t have been the Grinch at all if he had had a CASA volunteer.
